One of my guilty pleasures is watching What Not to Wear on TLC. I love Stacy London and Clinton Kelly’s caustic critique of the fashionably challenged. And usually, there is a happy ending, although I’ve seen a couple of southern belle’s hate their haircuts. (We southern girls tend to like things that sparkle and love to wear our hair big) When my gal pal, Stormy Pate, gave me the idea to use a modiste as the heroine in my next book, I immediately wondered how I could incorporate What Not to Wear into the plot of a romance novel.
In Slave to Fashion, my heroine, Georgiana Talbot, has risen to the equivalent of an 18th century fashion designer and consultant. Everyone who is anyone clamors for her designs and perhaps her proclivity has blinded her a bit to the fact that a person exists under all the frills and lace for Georgiana only has an eye for the clothing. Paired with her clever assistant, Clinton, (yes, I did!) Georgiana rules and dictates London couture.
Knowing this, Blane MacLaren, Earl Lockerbie, arrives from Scotland with a proposition for the fashionista-an offer she can’t refuse.
Inspired by What Not to Wear, I sought to keep a humorous tone in Slave to Fashion as you will see from the excerpt. Read it HERE.

A taste of the forbidden…
Georgiana Talbot intends to remain a spinster in order to ensure her younger sisters debut and find husbands. But when she encounters a devilish Scot who ignites a searing fire within her, Georgiana realizes just how much she has denied herself regarding the pleasures of the flesh. Determined to learn more, she concocts a daring scheme.
A touch of the taboo…
Seducing the haute ton’s premier modiste into buying linen from his mills is foremost on Blane MacLaren’s mind. Until his need to bend the brash beauty to his will drives him to enter into a scandalous agreement—Georgiana will purchase his linens if he will tutor her in an array of dark delights and forbidden pleasures. Yet nothing could have prepared him for the effect his very willing student will have on him—or how far a harmless lesson in lust can go.

/ May 6, 2011This book sounds fantastic, Debra. Out of the norm of what we find in historicals, and so refreshing. I’m going to have to take a peek at what other fantastic things you have to offer, too

/ May 6, 2011Debra,
I’ve never seen What Not to Wear. However you picqued my curiosty. I don’t watch much tv. I would rather read a good Historical romance or Paranormal/Urban Fantasy Erotic romance.
Reading your excerpt on your book. It reminds me of the movie The Duchess with Kierra Knightly. It’s a wonderful movie. She was a fashion genius. The Ton always wore what she wore. She really did make a fashion statement in her erra. I look forward to reading you new book. I really liked the way you used your favorite show as a tool for this book.
I wish you much success and many, many more books.

I read the excerpts, can’t wait to read the whole book!
